Mac McClung is headed to Spain.
The Gate City native best known for being back-to-back-to-back winner of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest agreed to terms with Basquet Girona on Thursday. Former NBA All-Star Marc Gasol owns Basquet Girona, which plays in Liga ACB, the top professional league in Spain.
An ESPN.com article quoted McClung’s mother, Lenoir McClung, who told the media outlet that her son was no longer eligible for a two-way contract, which allows a player to move back and forth between the NBA and the G League, in the same manner a baseball player can go back and forth between the majors and the minor leagues.
“It didn’t really make a lot of sense coming back to the G-League right now,” the McClung matriarch told ESPN. “Were you going to try to break your own record again? Try to get a three-time MVP?”
McClung suited up for two NBA teams last season: the Indiana Pacers and the Chicago Bulls. He previously played for the Orlando Magic, L.A. Lakers, Philadephia 76ers, and had another stint with the Bulls.
McClung was a sensation during his high school career for Gate City, leading the Blue Devils to their first and only state championship in basketball. In the process, McClung set the Virginia High School League scoring records for a career and a single season, with Allen Iverson surpassing the single-season mark.
McClung started his college career at Georgetown, where he spent two seasons. He averaged 13.1 points as a freshman, leading all rookies in the Big East Conference in scoring. A foot injury truncated his sophomore season to 21 games, but his numbers remained strong: 15.7 points, 2.4 assists, and 1.4 steals.
After initially declaring for the 2020 NBA Draft, McClung withdrew his name and transferred to Texas Tech, where he averaged 15.5 points in his lone season before he turned pro.
McClung is a two-time MVP in the G League, capturing that honor in 2023-24 and again last season. He also holds the G League career scoring record, reaching that milestone back in March with a 59-point performance that stands as the third-highest scoring single-season effort in G League history.
The 2026-27 Liga ACB season runs on a different clock than the college or NBA campaigns. The season begins Sept. 19-20 with a two-day event in Barcelona called the Endesa Supercup. The playoffs begin May 25 and conclude no later than June 29.
